Abstract:Silicon photonics is a promising platform that is compatible withCMOS technology, offering advantages in miniaturization, simplicity offabrication, and the potential for mass production. However, on-chippolarization-entangled photon sources (essential components for quantuminformation processing and quantum computing) is very challenging to make. Onereason is silicon waveguides support only Transverse Electric (TE) modes, whereas polarization entanglement typically requires both TE and Transverse Magnetic(TM) modes. Additionally, collecting quantum lights from silicon chips withoptical fibers are always lossy, result in low observed brightness. In thistalk, I will discuss our recent breakthroughs in optimizing the overall system, employing novel, low-loss edge couplers. These have enabled us to develop asilicon-based polarization-entangled photon source with ultra-high observedbrightness comparable to that of traditional bulk crystal sources.
