Book presents global perspectives on quantum simulation

Dimitris Angelakis edited the book Quantum Simulaions with Photons and Polaritons published by Springer (2017).

The book Quantum Simulations with Photons and Plaritons was three years in the making, says Dimitris Angelakis, editor of the volum and a CQT Principal Investigator.

"It's a broad representation of the state of the art of the field, by different groups in different countries, ranging from theory to experiment and covering all the platforms", he says.

Dimitris was invited by publisher Springer to contribute the book to a series on Quantum Sciences and Technology. It's aimed at graduate students and researchers in the field.

Dimitris co-authored one chapter with his collaborators as well as editing the other sumbmissions. That involved inviting the contributions and coordinating among the authors to avoid repetition and ensure good coverage of the field. The chapters are:

• Strongly Correlated Polaritons in Nonlinear Cavity Arrays.
• Phase Diagram and Excitations of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard Model
• Out-of-Equilibrium Physics in Driven Dissipative Photonic Resonator Arrays
• Exciton-Polariton Quantum Simulators
• Strongly Correlated PHotons in Nonlinear Nonophotonic Platforms
• Quantum Simulations with Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics
• Dirac Dynamics in Wave guide Arrays: From Zitterbewegung to Photonic Topological Insulators

In the future, says Dimitris, he would like to write a whole book himself. "There are more invitations � and I would like to. Writing complements research very nicely. Doing research can be frustrating at times especially when you hit dead ends, whereas with a book, progress can be slow but more rewarding on a regular basis. However, my group is very busy and active in its research at the moment, so it will be some time before I commit to another one."

Dimitris is thankful for the contributors' time too. The book's dedication is "To my family and all the families of the contributing scientists for being patient with them."
